Hey PF, you should see Black Book as well. If an excellent WWII movie isn't enough, the lovely and talented Carice Van Houten (no relation to Milhous) turns in an excellent performance.

It's # in the queue. Thx.

Northanger Abbey (2007 version)--> Solid B

Made-for-TV, so don't expect an epic film masterpiece, but it was entertaining, if short. Yes, I like Jane Austen, sue me.

I went to see Man On Wire yesterday at the Plaza. It's the documentary about Phillipe Petit's highwire walk between the two towers of the World Trade Center back in 1974. Very moving story and well-made documentary. Highly recommended.

Looks like people who actually see it like it better than the people who pre-judge it.

Sounds like a colossal waste of $8.50.

Man on a Wire doesn't start until tomorrow up here.
That's low on the totem pole though because Vicky Cristina Barcelona, American Teen and Bottle Shock debut tomorrow too. Those all take precedence over Man on a Wire, which seems like it'd be a perfect movie for DVD viewing.

Metropolis--> B+

More like an intellectual exercise/cinema history lesson than watching a movie. Pretty disjointed since it was missing segments and the acting is way overwrought. Still, you can see why it is considered a masterpiece.

If I were a student of cinema history, I guess I would give it an A+++++

Moving story? Was he dying of brain cancer and looking to raise money for orphans with his stunt?

Did he fall 1000 feet and splatter on the pavement?

If the answer to both of those questions is "NO" my verdict stands. Waste of money.

Margot at the Wedding - Nicole Kidman plays a neurotic estranged mother who shows up before her sisters wedding and starts deconstructing both her sister and her future brother-in-law. Not quite a drama, not quite a comedy. If you're looking for a reason not to like Nicole Kidman, this is the movie for you. If you'd like to see when Jennifer Jason-Leigh will stop looking like an uncomfortable teen and start looking pretty, this is the movie for you. If you're curious about seeing Jack Black in a role where he doesn't have a mouthful of scenery every time the camera cuts to him, you should rent this. D+

I can't believe I just saw a movie, in the theater no less. I think the last movie I saw in the theater was the last Bourne movie. Anyway...

The Dark Knight was good. The only bad thing about it was it was so long, I had to get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of it. My wife thought it was too violent. It's a shame Heath Ledger is dead - he was quite the good actor.

They should have cast pit bulls as the bad guy dogs though.

Excellent. Glad you liked it.

Both of the women in that movie will be in the Tom Cruise Blockbuster/Disaster "Valkyrie" later this year.

Hard Candy - B+ A flat out brutal indy film that pits a 14 year old girl against a possible pedophile. Lots of gutwrenching emotional twists and turns, changing direction a half dozen times at least. Ellen Page plays the girl and is flat out amazing (the pregnant girl in Juno and Shadowcat, the girl who runs through walls, in X-men 3). The use of sound (ambient only, no music) and an advertising/music video HD closeup style with lots of manipulation of color do a lot to build and hold intensity.

I Am Legend B+: Will Smith has to carry this movie all by himself like Tom Hands in Castaway. Solid, I was hoping for great.

I give it an A/A-, but it DOES get an extra 1/2 grade because I watched it with the sprouts and they lurved it. Merry Christmas!

Saturday night at the Drive-In saw:

Traitor-Don Cheadle stars in an excellent and complex film about the war on terror. You're never really sure what's going on. A
Pineapple Express-The stoner part of this stoner film works great; especially if you're stoned. The rest is pretty lame. C

I don't think you understand the point of stoner movies.
